Facilities & Maintenance Director
(231) 347 – 9742
Steve Schnell joined Camp Daggett as Facilities & Maintenance Director in January 2023. Steve’s key responsibilities are to maintain the buildings, grounds, and equipment of Camp Daggett, as well as aid the Executive Director and Facilities Committee in budget planning for the maintenance of Camp. Steve additionally oversees larger capital and infrastructure projects.
Steve has been a Community Development Planner with over 20 years of experience helping organizations and communities achieve their goals. Most recently he was Director of the Charlevoix County Office for Housing North, a regional collaboration focused on work-force housing. The Camp Daggett position is a bit “back to his roots” as in the early 2000’s he was the Emmet County Headlands Park Caretaker. In this role Steve oversaw and conducted maintenance and grounds keeping for the 600-acre Emmet County Park. He lived on site to coordinate daily upkeep as well as project planning for new construction. He also communicated with the County Parks and Rec. Committee and initiated successful fundraising for a new cross-country ski trail and groomer, among other things.
Steve and his wife Betsy live in Boyne City and he is active in cycling, skiing and snowshoeing as well as camping, backpacking, and kayaking. He is very active with the Top of Michigan Mountain Bike Association – doing everything from maintaining trails to organizing events and writing grants. He is also very mechanically inclined and has remodeled several houses “from the ground up”.
In Steve’s own words. “I’m really excited for this opportunity to work at such a beautiful camp with 100 years of history on Walloon Lake. This is an amazing place and I can’t wait to learn from Ed and be part of the team that creates so many great camp experiences and memories.”
