Meet Steve

Steve Schnell joined Camp Daggett as Facilities & Maintenance Director in January 2023. Steve’s key responsibilities are to maintain the buildings, grounds, and equipment of Camp Daggett as well as to aid the Executive Director and Facilities Committee in budget planning for the maintenance of camp. Additionally, Steve oversees larger capital and infrastructure projects.

Steve has been a Community Development Planner with over 20 years of experience helping organizations and communities achieve their goals. Most recently, he was Director of the Charlevoix County Office for Housing North, a regional collaboration focused on workforce housing. The role at camp is a bit “back to his roots:” in the early 2000’s, Steve was the Emmet County Headlands Park Caretaker. In this role, he oversaw the maintenance of the 600-acre Emmet County Park. He lived on-site to coordinate daily upkeep and project planning. He also communicated with the County Parks and Rec. Committee and initiated fundraising for a new cross-country ski trail and groomer, among other things.

Steve and his wife Betsy live in Boyne City, and he enjoys cycling, skiing and snowshoeing as well as camping, backpacking, and kayaking. He is very active with the Top of Michigan Mountain Bike Association, doing everything from maintaining trails to organizing events and writing grants. He is also very mechanically inclined and has remodeled several houses “from the ground up.” We are thrilled to have Steve’s handiness on our year-round team!
