Meet Chuck

Chuck Whitney

Lodge Manager and Groundskeeper

(231) 347 – 9742

Chuck Whitney brings to Camp Daggett a wide-ranging skill set gained from working and playing in some of the most beautiful and interesting places in the country.  He is extremely excited to now have the chance to work, live, and play on Walloon lake – one of Michigan’s truly spectacular settings.

Born in Gaylord, MI and a camper here in the early 1990s, he finished high school in Suttons Bay, MI before graduating with honors from Hope College (Holland, MI) where he studied Business Management, Communications, and Creative Writing.  Chuck moved to the High Deserts of New Mexico shortly after graduation and there he forged a lifelong love of wild places, adventure, and stewardship of the land.

Chuck was the co-owner and editor of a monthly community magazine in NM, led backpacking expeditions throughout the west and in the mountains on WV as an Outdoor Educator, and spent seven seasons as a Hotshot Wildland Firefighter for the United States Forest Service.  After moving back to MI in 2018 he lived in an off-grid tiny house for a few years before spending an amazing stretch in his family’s 80-year-old log cabin in the Pigeon River Country State Forest east of Vanderbilt, MI.

Whether it be GPS-based computer mapping of Camp Daggett’s incredible property and facilities or splitting firewood for the next bonfire, Chuck is looking forward to using his skill set and energy – as so many before him have – to help sustain this incredible place.  As is often the case when the right thing happens in life, he is still not sure whether he found Camp Daggett or Camp Daggett found him!
