I am but one. I am but one that chooses to help make a difference in the world that we live. One person at a time, one situation at a time, one moment in time; I am but one. Too often, many of us tend to fall into the feeling of insignificance. The feeling that we are but only one, and how can my individual efforts really make the difference? We see this in a person’s resistance to recycling. We see this in a person’s inability to stop, pick up, and place a piece of refuse in a nearby trash receptacle. We see this in a person’s ill respect for not being a steward of our natural world. Countless other examples above and beyond these are witnessed each and every day that may lead another to believe that someone else will always be there to do it. Why not us?......
Mahatma Ghandi once stated, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” Don’t we all want to help be the change? If your response is no, then what is your purpose? By not holding ourselves accountable and obligatory to help improve our world in some way shape or form is a wasted trip on this adventure we call life. I am so grateful that I am surrounded by a network of people that are enjoying this journey in support of the Camp Daggett Organization. People genuinely paying it forward for right and just reasons and enjoy doing it because they know in their hearts it is the right thing to do.
By the way, a piece of advice - avoid “energy vampires” at all costs. Energy vampires are those individuals that suck the positive energy right out of you. In short, they are simply positively negative people! I choose to avoid them at all costs like the plague or H1N1. A saying such as, “If you choose to flock with the turkeys, you will never soar with the eagles” comes to mind.
Contrary to this off the wall bit of advice - the staff, devoted Board Members, special committee members, countless volunteers, our loyal donors, camper parents, community supporters, etc., keep the positive energy reserves fully loaded and adequately stocked for the good of Camp Daggett. They have the direct opposite effect and help to fill you up. If you were acutely aware of all of the selfless and random acts of kindness by these people, it would humble you to the nth degree. Every time I begin to think, “What could actually top the amount of genuine care and concern that this person has blessed our organization with?”...... this question is answered time and again. This question would never get answered if our fellow neighbors stepped back and firmly believed that someone else would do it. NEVER feel that your good will efforts are not needed or appreciated. For Camp Daggett, they always have and always will be.
Thank you for reading, but most importantly – thank you for doing your part and helping us to be the change we all want to see.
Yours in service,
Brent A. Marlatt - Executive Director
